The tragedy arises, not from an obvious weakness in the character of Hamlet, but rather from his inability to deal with an apparently insoluble moral dilemma.

The role of Hamlet is the longest (1,569 lines) and, according to many, the most demanding in the Shakespearean canon.

A typical example of his approach to drama, A Protégée of the Mistress is almost cinematic in its presentation. The action is represented by a series of vivid snapshots, in which Ostrovsky quickly and subtly illustrates the foibles and weaknesses of each character, and shows how they are forced into a hostile dependence on each other. A recurring theme of Ostrovsky’s plays is the uneasy balance between social utility and moral rectitude, which is encapsulated in this bitter comedy in the character of Madam Ulanbekov, wealthy landowner and relentless guardian of young wards, whom she forces into marriages of convenience as she sees fit.

by August Strindberg
Presented by the Online Stage
The Stronger Woman
Motherly Love
Pariah
Simoon

Although he achieved notable success as a novelist, poet, essayist, and painter, August Strindberg is best known today as one of the first and most significant masters of naturalist theatre. Among his many dramatic works are a number of one-act plays, four of which are presented in this recording. All of the plays feature a persistent theme in Strindberg’s works: the inevitable disillusion that results from intense involvement in relationships, whether they be familial, romantic, or circumstantial.

By Henrik Ibsen

Translated by Charles Archer

Presented by the Online Stage

Rosmersholm is a play surrounding the deep and intense political and cultural change in Norway in the middle of the 1880s, a period during which the traditional ruling class was forced to relinquish their right to impose their ideals on the rest of society. We follow Johannes Rosmer, a pastor who has resigned from his position; Rebecca West, a woman who sees Rosmer’s potential and believes she can help him to realize his dream of creating a world of “happy, noble people”; and Headmaster Kroll, Rosmer’s former best friend, who takes it upon himself to deliver some home truths to the other two. Rosmer’s view of life is seriously challenged by his interactions with Rebecca, which leads to a shattering conclusion.

This production is part of a project by The Online Stage to record all 26 plays by Ibsen.
