Chambers is a classic in the field of the supernatural. The series of 10 short stories is named after a fictional play of the same name which induces madness in the minds of those that read it. The Yellow King and Carcosa were often alluded to in a popular TV series True Detective, where evil and madness are often a theme.

Chambers, an American gets lost whilst hunting in Brittany and encounters The Demoiselle D’Ys and is invited back to the castle where she lives. While the two become close, it is clear to the listener that this castle and those who live in it are strangers to the world the American recognises, and he returns to the world he knew, after a sudden attack by a snake.
Jeanne is 19 and lives alone in the castle except for her nurse, her four falconers and her beater Glenmarec Rene. The ending is similar to that of “An Inhabitant of Carcosa”, with Philip finding himself standing beside unfamiliar ruins that prove to be those of the chateau and discovers a gravestone for Jeanne who “died in her youth for love of Philip, A Stranger, AD 1573”.

It is a pariah among streets – a street without a Quarter. It is generally understood to lie outside the pale of the aristocratic Avenue de l’Observatoire. The students of the Montparnasse Quarter consider it swell and will have none of it. The Latin Quarter, from the Luxembourg, its northern frontier, sneers at its respectability and regards with disfavour the correctly costumed students who haunt it. Few strangers go into it. At times, however, the Latin Quarter students use it as a thoroughfare between the rue de Rennes and the Bullier….”

Chambers, this story is set in the Latin Quarter of Paris, where a young artist falls in love with a nameless girl. He has no name, so he names her by the street. Rue Barree in English translates to Road Closed. Are there connotations here, or not?
