Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray presented by The Online Stage.

Vanity Fair centers on the young Becky Sharp and her dear friend Amelia Sedley during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Rebecca Sharp is the daughter of an art teacher and a French dancer, being ambitious, intelligent, and strong-willed in order to get what she wants out of society. She is often touted as amoral and an anti-heroine. Alternately, her friend Amelia is kind, good-natured, and born into wealth. The interwoven fortunes of the two women play out among a backdrop of social skirmishes and human afflictions of pride and ego.

The novel is presented as a multiplot puppet play at a never-ending fair, using both a preface and a coda to bookend the story. The narrator character also interjects themselves into the story with gossip and opinions about the action occurring in certain scenes. Published as a serial in 19 monthly installments, it is a satire of 19th-century Britain, highlighting hypocrisy and opportunism. After initial release, it was published in full in 1848 with the subtitle of A Novel Without a Hero, a nod to Thackeray’s feelings about heroism in literature.

The Invisible Man

A Grotesque Romance

by H. G. Wells

Presented by Voices of Today

Narrated by Graham Scott, Andy Harrington, Denis Daly, Patrick Barker, and Lillian Rachel

The Invisible Man was the fourth sci-fi novel written by Wells in the 1890s. The main character, Griffin, is one of the intimidating villains in all popular literature. The archetypal “mad scientist,” Griffin devotes himself to an obsessive study of optics and realizes his ambition to render livings things permanently invisible. After making a cat invisible, he successfully applies the procedure to himself. After causing chaos in London, he travels to the village of Iping in Sussex and takes up residence in a local hotel. He attempts to conceal his invisibility by wearing gloves, bandages on his face, and a false nose. However, due to his irascible and impulsive temperament, the inhabitants soon become aware that he is invisible, and Griffin decides to institute a reign of terror in the neighborhood.

The Invisible Man has become one of Well’s most popular works and has been adapted multiple times for presentation in film, television, and in graphic novels.

The Tin Woodman of Oz by L. Frank Baum presented by The Online Stage.

A young boy named Woot encounters The Tin Woodman and The Scarecrow, who are sharing stories of the past. Woot inquires how the Tin Woodman came to be made of tin. The Tin Woodman, known as Nick Chopper, was in love with a girl named Nimmie Amee, who also happened to be the Wicked Witch of the East’s ward. The Witch enchanted the Tin Woodman’s axe, which caused him to chop off all his limbs. Each limb was replaced by Ku-Klip, a tinsmith. Figuring he could no longer love the girl without his heart, Nick Chopper left her. Soon after these events, Dorothy and the Scarecrow encounter him on the road to Oz. Woot suggests that perhaps he should find Nimmie Amee now that his heart was restored by The Wizard, and the trio sets off on a quest to track her down. This is the twelfth book in the Oz series.

The First Men in the Moon

By H. G. Wells

Narrated by Graham Scott and Andy Harrington.

Travel to Moon was probably the first subject addressed in science fiction literature. The earliest surviving account of a lunar voyage is that described by the Second Century Greek writer Lucian of Samosata in his True History. In the Seventeenth Century, the astronomer Johannes Kepler, Anglican divine Francis Godwin, and natural philosopher Francis Bacon all composed imaginary accounts of lunar travel, and in 1835, Edgar Allan Poe wrote “The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall.” In 1865, Jules Verne’s presented his account of a trip to the Moon in “From the Earth to the Moon.”

Here, it was almost inevitable that this subject would attract the interest of H.G Wells in the batch of sci-fi novels that he wrote between 1895 and 1901. In Well’s story, the vehicle is not a balloon, as in many of the previous accounts, but a sphere made of a mysterious substance, named “cavorite” after its inventor, Cavor, who accompanies the narrator, Bedford, on the trek to the moon. The ascent is made possible by the fact the “cavorite” is, in Well’s words, “transparent to gravity.”

Like previous lunar visitors, Bedford and Cavor discover that the Moon is not uninhabited and that they have to develop ways of dealing with an alien civilization.
