When Mr. Lepel and his friend Mr. Rothsay return from travels abroad, a half-forgotten play witnessed in Italy lingers uneasily in their memories. A subsequent visit to a quiet country estate draws Mr. Lepel into the lives of those around him, as a young woman at the gate becomes the unknowing centre of rival affections. As illness, friendship, and good intentions begin to intersect, events unfold that will test loyalty and conscience, and lead toward consequences no one has foreseen.

Little Novels, published in 1887, is a collection of fourteen short stories by Wilkie Collins. Revised by the author, these stories had appeared in various British and American periodicals over the previous ten years, very often with different titles. They are stand-alone stories dealing with a variety of subjects: love, marriage, the supernatural, class, money, and murder; most of them contain a mystery or twist to the tale which is bound to delight fans of Collins’ best-known novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone.

“Mr. Lepel and the Housekeeper” is the eighth story in the collection. It was originally published as “The Girl at the Gate” in The Spirit of the Times in 1884 and in the English Illustrated Magazine in 1885.

Vanity Fair by William Makepeace Thackeray presented by The Online Stage.

Vanity Fair centers on the young Becky Sharp and her dear friend Amelia Sedley during the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Rebecca Sharp is the daughter of an art teacher and a French dancer, being ambitious, intelligent, and strong-willed in order to get what she wants out of society. She is often touted as amoral and an anti-heroine. Alternately, her friend Amelia is kind, good-natured, and born into wealth. The interwoven fortunes of the two women play out among a backdrop of social skirmishes and human afflictions of pride and ego.

The novel is presented as a multiplot puppet play at a never-ending fair, using both a preface and a coda to bookend the story. The narrator character also interjects themselves into the story with gossip and opinions about the action occurring in certain scenes. Published as a serial in 19 monthly installments, it is a satire of 19th-century Britain, highlighting hypocrisy and opportunism. After initial release, it was published in full in 1848 with the subtitle of A Novel Without a Hero, a nod to Thackeray’s feelings about heroism in literature.

The Magic of Oz by L. Frank Baum presented by The Online Stage.

When his son Kiki finds these notes, he transforms himself into a hawk and sets off on an adventure. Landing in Ev, he runs into Ruggedo, the former Nome King who was exiled and now sees his opportunity for revenge through Kiki’s power. Transforming himself and Ruggedo into birds, they fly into Oz, escaping detection, and begin to build an animal army. Meanwhile, Ozma’s birthday is fast approaching.
The Tin Woodman of Oz by L. Frank Baum presented by The Online Stage.

A young boy named Woot encounters The Tin Woodman and The Scarecrow, who are sharing stories of the past. Woot inquires how the Tin Woodman came to be made of tin. The Tin Woodman, known as Nick Chopper, was in love with a girl named Nimmie Amee, who also happened to be the Wicked Witch of the East’s ward. The Witch enchanted the Tin Woodman’s axe, which caused him to chop off all his limbs. Each limb was replaced by Ku-Klip, a tinsmith. Figuring he could no longer love the girl without his heart, Nick Chopper left her. Soon after these events, Dorothy and the Scarecrow encounter him on the road to Oz. Woot suggests that perhaps he should find Nimmie Amee now that his heart was restored by The Wizard, and the trio sets off on a quest to track her down. This is the twelfth book in the Oz series.

The Good Soldier by Ford Madox Ford presented by The Online Stage.

What does it mean to be “just good people?” That is how the two couples—one British and one American—in this story are described. But what happens when you look deeper, peeling back the layers of politeness and civility? It is a tale of love, of disappointment, of miscommunication, and missed opportunities. The author wanted to call the tragedy of the Ashburnhams and their seemingly perfect marriage “The Saddest Story,” but his publishers asked for a “happier” title. The BBC has ranked it 13th on its list of the 100 greatest British novels.

Cast:

John Dowell – Jeff Moon

Leonora Ashburnham – Ariana Mertz

Edward Ashburnham – Ted Wenskus

Rinkitink in Oz by L. Frank Baum presented by The Online Stage.

Prince Inga, aided by three magic pearls, is set to rule the island of Pingaree. King Rinkitink arrives with his talking goat, Bilbil, determined to take a vacation on Pingaree. Inga’s father, King Kitticut, is captured by Regos’ invaders along with all the rest of the people of Pingaree except for Rinkitink, Bilbil, and Inga himself. The trio sail to the island of Regos and easily overtake King Gos, who flees to the neighboring island of Coregos, ruled by the wicked Queen Cor. Tucking the pearls into his shoe for safe keeping, Inga and Rinkitink get some sleep at the palace but by morning, the shoes are gone. Back in Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard hear of these events and travel to the Nome Kingdom to offer help in restoring peace among all parties. This is the tenth book in the Oz series.

The Trojan Women by Euripides, translated by Ian Johnston, presented by The Online Stage.

Euripides’s play follows the fates of the women of Troy after their city has been sacked, their husbands killed, and their remaining families taken away as slaves. It serves as an anti-war narrative as it highlights the suffering of the women left behind. The tragedy also calls attention to how women were treated as commodities in the past by showing how they were divided among the remaining men as spoils of war.
